What will you be learning?This course is delivered in association with Southampton City College's Marine Technology Department, using Hamble Skills Centre's new workshops. The course is designed to give students an insight into what it would be like to work in the marine industry.Level 1 Course Students will learn the following units: > Working safely in an engineering environment > Developing yourself and working with other people on engineering activities. The two optional but recommended units for marine engineering are: > Making components using hand tools and fitting techniques (wood based materials). > Assembling mechanical components. Level 2 Course Essential (mandatory) units must be undertaken by all students. > Working safely in an engineering environment. > Developing yourself and working with other people on engineering activities. > Using and communicating technical information. > Marking out for engineering activities. The two recommended units for marine engineering are: > Using computer software packages to assist in engineering activities > Fitting using hand skills Additional units can be undertaken though will be subject to a surcharge. > Identifying and selecting engineering materials > Maintaining mechanical devices and systems > Producing engineering drawings using computer aided design > Making components from composite materials Enrichment Activities: A variety of enrichment is avaialble. When?Start date: September.Duration: 1-2 years. How is it delivered?: Full-time or day release. Availability: Current and continuing. Time Slot: Daytime. Who can do it?Age range: 16 - 19.Entry Requirements: None, although you will need to attend an interview What will you be working towards?Qualification: EAL Level 1 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations (500/1621/0) .Awarding Body: EAL. Type: NVQ. Sector: Engineering . Qualification: EAL Level 2 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations (500/1448/1) . Awarding Body: EAL. Type: NVQ. Sector: Engineering . What happens when you have finished?What other learning could you do:There is clear progression both to and from this NVQ. This qualification will allow progression to higher levels, for example this qualifcation allows progression onto a variety of Level 2 Engineering NVQs including the Performing Engineering Operations Level 2 and relevant VRQs. This qualification could also allow progression onto other related sectors NVQs and VRQs, and onto the SEMTA Engineering Apprenticeship Framework.
