Construction - Building Crafts What will you be learning?This course provides you with an excellent opportunity to gain skills in brickwork, block paving, laying patio slabs, concreting, drainage, carpentry, fixing of guttering and rainwater systems, plastering, painting, roof tiling & wall tiling. This will enable you to either specialise in one of the trade areas which offers job opportunities in the areas of new build, refurbishment or building maintenance. All of your tutors are skilled in each of the trade areas in which you will be taught. They have all worked in the industry as well as supervising construction work on site.During the whole period of the course you will have the opportunity to study the following subject areas: • Low working platforms • Handle and Store Materials and Components • Fix construction components • Cut, lay and fix construction components • Mix construction materials • Apply Finishing Materials • Setting out for construction components The theory content of the award, together with knowledge of the construction industry will be covered in formal classroom sessions. For this one year full time course you will be expected to be in college for approximately 16 hours per week. Students are given a timetabled scheme of work to guide practical and theory progress. You will be assessed continually through the completion of practical tasks, projects and workbooks. Assessment will be on an individual basis and there is a final multiple choice paper. It is essential that both practical and theory assessments are passed for students to obtain the full qualification and progress within the college. You will also be expected to study Functional Skills in Maths and English. At the end of this one year programme you should have achieved the Foundation Construction Award, together with the Functional Skills listed above. Enrichment Activities: A programme of enrichment is available using Hamble Community Sports College's facilities When?Start date: September.Duration: 1 year. How is it delivered?: Full-time. Availability: Current and continuing. Time Slot: Daytime. Who can do it?Age range: 16 - 19.Entry Requirements: Entry requirements for this course include a good achievement and attendance report from school and a successful interview in College, demonstrating interest and commitment to study. Students will be expected to provide evidence of having maximised their achievement at school, including GCSEs at grades D-G. Course Fees: You will need to purchase steel toe-capped shoes and overalls for this course.

You may also progress straight into employment where opportunities exist in many of the construction trades.
