What will you be learning?

The BTEC Introductory Diploma is designed to encourage you to develop the personal skills and qualities you need for work, learning and to help you achieve your full potential. BTEC Introductory qualifications incorporate practical, theory and assignment work. Each one is taught in the context of real jobs and careers in a chosen vocational sector. This gives you the chance to explore the opportunities offered in that sector and to acquire appropriate vocational skills.

The course is made up of eight units, three compulsory Core Units, two compulsory Personal Skills Units and three Optional Units What subjects will I study? Core Units (Compulsory) •Starting Work in Construction •Working in Construction •Developing Skills and Working Safely in Construction Personal Skills Units (Compulsory) •Personal Effectiveness •Social Responsibilities at Work Optional Units •Developing Joinery Skills •Developing Building Services Skills (Incorporating basic Electrical and Plumbing skills) •Basic Building Maintenance

For this one year full time course you will be expected to be in college for approximately 16 hours per week. Students are given a timetabled scheme of work to guide practical and theory progress.

The Core and Optional units are graded Pass (P), Merit (M) or Distinction (D). The Personal Skills units are designated Pass or Fail.

You may also have the opportunity to study Functional Skills in Maths and English

Who can do it?

Age range: 16 - 19.
Entry Requirements: Entry requirements for this course are GCSE Grade E or above in Maths and English or equivalent qualifications. Course allocation is also subject to a good achievement and attendance report from school and a successful interview in College showing interest and commitment to study.
Course Fees: You will need to purchase steel toe-capped shoes and overalls for this course.

What happens when you have finished?

What other learning could you do:
This course provides a specialist qualification that could lead onto further vocational education such as a level 2 qualification. You could also go on to do a work-based apprenticeship programme, which will give you more experience and qualifications for entering employment.

With further training, you could go into a job related to construction such as a Construction Site Manager.

The course will also help you develop the basic knowledge, skills and understanding that many employers are looking for.

You may wish to progress onto other construction related courses at Level 2 offered at Eastleigh College. These include Diploma courses in Bricklaying and Site Carpentry. Subject to passing the relevant aptitude assessments, students who achieve a Merit grade or higher may also be accepted onto the Plumbing or Electrical Installation courses. A BTEC Introductory Diploma in Construction can also prepare you for employment in the Construction Industry.
